Conclusions
It's the simple things in life that I enjoy, and X-COM: ENFORCERhappens to be one of them. It's nothing fancy or groundbreaking, but what it is, is a fun diversion from the rest of it. Althoughit's not a perfect game by any means (I don't think we've found oneyet), it's old-skool fun at its best. Lock and load baby -- it'stime to save humanity one more time.

The story is straightforward annihilate the alien invaders. Andsince you take control of a big robot, it makes the job a whole loteasier. Of course, being a robot isnt enough. There are a widevariety of weapons to use and upgrade. Among them are a shotgun, nuker, lighting gun, freeze gun, flame thrower, mass driver,psy-cannon. But theres no weapon switching since the Enforcercant carry more than one gun at a time. Your creator, an annoyinglittle professor, randomly drops weapons in whatever area yourefighting aliens. Simply walking over an item will equip it. (STVanyone?) Sometimes this method works against you like when youhappen to be moving backward (you cant see whats behind you) andget a weapon thats ineffective at fighting the 3,000 behemothcharging at you. Of course, if you hit a speed booster you canretreat and find a more powerful weapon.

Everything you blast delivers lots of things called datapoints.Depending on the size of the alien, entire areas can be filled withthem. Between missions, these datapoints can be exchanged forweapon and equipment upgrades. (Upgrading armor, jumping abilityand running are essential for success.) Each weapon has fourupgrade levels, with each level getting progressively morepowerful. Theres nothing quite like unloading a few level-4 nukesto clear out a crowed building. Its very easy to upgrade things topoint of near invincibility. Unresearched items are found duringthe course of each mission and unlocked during the R&D phasebetween missions.

The weapon effects are very impressive, especially the psy-cannon.EE uses the Unreal Tournament engine and it looks great. And youdont need a monster rig to run it! After my last PC game Tribes2 this came as a bit of a relief. Only when there are fifty or soaliens running around and youve just unleashed a bombing run doesthe framerate hit the dirt. Its all very colourful and easy tolook at. The aliens come in a variety of shapes and sizes, withvarying attack and strength levels. Some are spectacular to watch. They come charging around corners, leaning into the turn, theirfeet slipping a bit. Sound is good too, but if I could changesomething, I would have given the professor, who constantly givesyou updates, more things to say.

There are two missions that deviate from the straight, "Destroy thealien teleporters and save the humans," and one of them isextremely easy. In terms of strategy, hitting hard and fast isusually the best way to get through a mission taking out theteleporters before they can beam in the more powerful aliens. Insome games, the level design lends itself to the game play withcool environments to look at and use to your advantage. But themajority of levels in EE take place in outdoor cities with thechance to blow open doors and explore rooms inside with not much inthe way of using the environment to your advantage. A few levelsare memorable, most notably one set on a farm with lots of cornfields, but too many have that "samey" feeling. It might have beeninteresting to see an underwater level or a zero-g battle. Thebosses are fairly easy to defeat. Keep moving and keep the enemylined up and theyll be showering datapoints all over the placesoon enough. (And Infograms pays further tribute to STV byincluding a boss that could be Mutoid Mans brother.) To help youraim you can hold down the right mouse button to bring up atargeting reticule. I only found it necessary to use this on someof the flying enemies while using a weak weapon. The powerfulweapons have so much splash damage you dont really have to worryabout aim. You dont even have to worry about getting lost becauseyou have access to a compass that points you in the direction ofanother alien teleporter or human that needs to be rescued.

One of the things I really liked about EE is that its got bonuslevels. These levels are reached by collecting the letters in"BONUS" that are scattered across each mission. The bonus missionsgive you the chance to increase your datapoint total, and thereforeaccess to more upgrades during the R&D phase. There are fourdifferent bonus levels and two of them salute a couple more arcadeclassics Frogger and Pac-Man.

The short of it, X-COM Enforcer is a great fast-paced action (butrepetitive) game that pays homage to a number of arcade games andwill probably show up on the console side of the industry.
