Beskrivning

2022 re-issue on red vinyl with insert.

Although it is often mistaken to be Sadus’ second album, 1991’sChemical Exposure is actually their first, having been releasedindependently by the band back in 1988 (under the title ofIllusions) — before their association with Roadrunner led to itsrenaming and reissue three years later. In every other respect, however, the two albums are one and the same, but let’s backtrack abit. Produced by Metal Church guitarist John Marshall, ChemicalExposure was initially and understandably considered yet anotherBay Area thrash metal album — though a very accomplished one atthat, and bolstered by an unusually clear sound for an independentrelease. Yet, in retrospect, the album stood balanced on a knife’sedge between the already fading (though few were aware of it)thrash scene and the death metal movement about to replace it.Indeed, much like Sepultura’s similarly transitioning (andastonishing) Schizophrenia LP of 1987, key Chemical Exposure trackslike “Certain Death,” “Torture,” “Fight or Die,” and even therather funny “Sadus Attack” still played by the former style’sunfailingly frantic, break-neck speed rules, rarely ever slowingdown to preempt the latter’s greater dynamic diversity. But theyoung Sadus players’ already awesome technical abilities clearlybelonged with the next generation of post-thrash deathsters, andtheir jaw-dropping displays on additional offerings like “Torture,”“Illusions,” and the title cut boasted a slew of escalatingsongwriting and performance complexities that were quite beyond theearlier Bay Area scene’s limits. Actually, if there’s any one thinghindering Sadus’ inclusion with the next wave, it would be DarrenTravis’ screaming/spitting lead vocal style, which, though hardlymusical in nature, still derived from earlier thrash frontmen suchas Slayer’s Tom Araya and Kreator’s Mille Petrozza (see the veryKreator-like “Hands of Fate,” another old demo reworked), insteadof the Cookie Monster growl typical of death metal. Nevertheless, and regardless of all this mostly academic, cross-subgenre debate, the fact is Chemical Exposure was a very fine debut — fine enoughto merit two releases obviously.
