The word "katechon" refers to therestraining force or entity tethering the Antichrist, and thusmaintaining equipoise between existence and annihilation. Sonicallyand conceptually, Katechon exhibits the control, power, andrestraint associated with the theological concept giving rise tothe band´s name. At this point in the lineage of extreme metal, thelines between the various subgenres are nearly indistinguishablyblurred. Bands emerging at this stage are almost certainlyinfluenced by Black, Death, and Thrash metal in relatively equalparts in addition to drawing influence from genres outside thetraditional spectrum of metal. This amorphous state, has led manybands to retreat into strict rehashing of formulaic retroapproaches. Katechon, however, embraces the entropic merging ofstylistic and aesthetic projections from the various branches ofthe genre and beyond. Under scrutiny since the release of its demolast year, Norway´s Katechon now presents its debut full-lengthrecording. "Man, God, Giant" reinforces the sound presented onKatechon´s previous recordings*, but features superb productionthat amplifies the impact of the tracks. Each of the three songsfeatured on the demo is reworked and incorporated into the album.Katechon´s sound is an amalgamation of Black, Death, and Thrashmetal, but played with a precision and authenticity that avoidsdilution. Instead the result is frenetic and possessed, devoid oftheatrics and self-indulgent virtuosity, and features highlyproficient and intricate songwriting executed with precision. Withphilosophically oriented lyrics and adorned with an esoteric andsurreal visual aesthetic, "Man, God, Giant" presents a uniquevision for the future direction of metal in which an equilibriummust be maintained between rote rehashing of past trends and theindiscriminate collision of clashing styles and sounds. Katechonrests perfectly at this equilibrium point, holding at bay theforces of dissolution.
