Black vinyl with insert. Limited 250 numbered copies

Speaking of the trio that shook Italy´s underground in the 80swith their furious brands of extreme metal, Schizo are probably theband that today gets recognized the least by the people, whileBulldozer and Necrodeath are more lucky. The intricate progressionof the band´s line-up definitely didn´t help, and Rotten Spiral isjust the fourth full-length release. About 32 years after Schizo´sfoundation, the only founder remaining is guitarist S.B. Reder butthe line-up seems tighter, with vocalist Nicola Accurso and drummerDario Casabona having joined Reder for a good decade. It´stherefore delightful to see their latest fatigue getting greatvotes from not only local magazines, even perfect scores. RottenSpiral shows a different perspective of the band. It´s not one wedidn´t see coming though. The two past releases, while keeping thetrademark blackened fusion of thrash metal and grindcore, suggesteda change of direction. Hints of moving from violence in playing tooppression in atmosphere, and here they start to take the upperhand. The black/grindcore influences take a backseat in favour of atamer, groovier thrash metal. One may think that this translates toa more reasoned and interesting songwriting, but in reality that´sonly half true. Slowing down means that you don´t have breakneckspeed and insane vocals to cover yourself anymore and offeringactual meat becomes a must. The album actually takes off in apromising manner. "Leaders of Deception" builds through many littlesections to explode in an unpredictable climax of old school thrashgoodness, while "Skeptic Flesh" is a more linear affair that relieson a killer chorus where the band´s harder side resurfaces again, more prominently than in the opener. From here on though, it getssamey rather quickly. The songs tend to blend together due tosimilar twists, similar vocal melodies that changed from torturedwails to a more generic anger, and riffs that don´t feel uniqueenough to sustain the rest. On the album´s defence, a couple ofthings have to be noted. Rotten Spiral is, in Schizo fashion, about40 minutes long. Even if more repetitive and at times predictablethan past material, it isn´t as tiresome as it may seem. It takes abit of will power to digest every song, but they aren´t devoid ofcharacter. The varied "Freikorps" for example begins with anominous intro of rain, and from about half onwards constitutes anhighlight by alternating military march rhythms with sudden fits ofanger. The album closer "The Final Warning" finalises the recordwith ambition, technique and skill. Schizo want to thrash yourskeleton and make sure you have a bloody good time with it. Thismight not be album of the year or the best album the band ever havedone but its surely not one to take lightly either. Thrash fansshould check this out
