2014 proved to be a real busy year forthe legendary Vulcano (considered by many to be the first extrememetal band from Brazil, even the first South American extreme metalband). They released both their ninth studio album, Wholly Wicked,the live album Stockholm Stormed and toured Europe with their EvilAlways Return Tour. Wholly Wicked, has its moments of raging funbut it really fails to capture that chaotic cult charm of theirpast albums. Perhaps it was their extremely loud and thumping basscoupled with the frenetic and accented delivery of the originalsinger, Angel, and the fast as fuck instrumentation that raged withan intensity that couldn´t pause for the likes of technicalproficiency that made their debut what it was. Somewhere overthirty-three years Vulcano became a different beast. It could bethat long fourteen year pause between 1990 and 2004, but honestly Iconsider 2004´s Tales From the Black Book one of Vulcano´s betteralbums, so it´s something else. The band´s intensity has taperedoff and, while I would like to contribute it to Angel no longersinging, the last album with him at the helm, Five Skulls and OneChalice, wasn´t anything to write home about. In the twenty-eightyears since the release of Bloody Vengeance there has been a shiftin the central foundation of Vulcano. The music no longer consistsof blasting energy and frenetic composition, rather the focus is oncontrolled pummeling and tempered aggression via thrash riffing andshouted vocals. While that might work for some bands, this isVulcano we´re talking about. When someone mentions them it´s notbecause of their technical prowess, it´s because of their onceraging intensity. I´m not saying that 2014´s Wholly Wicked is acomplete flop, it´s a mediocre album by a once great band. The fewflashes of brilliance throughout the album really emphasize justhow meandering and forced the rest of it sounds. Tracks like ThirstFor Vengeance show off some raging thrashy riffs and blastingdrums, but Vulcano interjects these oddly placed bits of melody andsomewhat intricate cyclical guitar riffing that just causes allmomentum to be lost. The entire album plays out like that, though;when things start to get good, be it a dirty solo and rollickingback beat or a filthy blasting piece of thrashing riffage,something happens to disturb the waters and completely kill theflow. If the band could go with the paces of Daughters Of PaganRituals for the entirety, then it would be a different story, asthat track is a rager with blazing guitars, dirty solos and abashing rhythm section. Most of the album just meanders along withsome thrashy riffing scattered about with nothing really tying thewhole process together. Judging from 2011´s Drowning in Blood and2013´s The Man the Key the Beast, the music on Wholly Wicked isn´tthat big of a surprise, but I will always compare everything thisband does to Bloody Vengeance. This band can really bring it homewhen they´re on fire so it´s unfortunate that most of this iswatered down. With only fleeting glimpses into the sound that madethem infamous, Wholly Wicked doesn´t do this band justice.Thirty-three minutes should not feel this long. I guess it´s notbad for what it is but it´s not what it could be.
