The Aching Hunger - Phase II shows features Steve Vai and TheMetropole Orchestra in Groningen, Holland on July 1st and 2nd.These was the only two shows in 2005, and featured new material notpreviously performed. In the hour long main part of theperformance, taking up the first 12 tracks, the orchestra backs Vaiup on some of his familiar tunes from earlier albums such asPassion and Warfare (Answers, Liberty, For The Love Of God) andReal Illusions: Reflections (Lotus Feet), set to full orchestralinstrumentation by a team of orchestrators. Vai describes a sectionas a tribute to his mentor, Frank Zappa, but in truth much in theorchestral works recalls Zappa´s music. Whether Vai will be able tomake a transition from heavy metal guitar virtuoso to composerremains to be seen, but this show demonstrates that his musicbenefits from being transposed to an orchestra and that, with theright staging and mixing, even aggressive electric guitar playingcan work with an orchestra.
