Originally afive-piece formed in Melbourne in 1985, Australian rock band BoomCrash Opera, like many before them, got their grounding from thepub rock circuit. Their striking debut blended the muscular rock of"Listen Like Thieves"-period INXS with an almost English melodicrichness not dissimilar to Tears for Fears. Their most successfulalbum was their second one, These Here Are Crazy Times, and itfeatured slick, commercial pop. As in previous outings, lead singerDale Ryder's effortless vocal delivery and Richard Pleasance'sskilful guitar work helped disguise the fact that underneath thecatchy melodies and slick production, there wasn't a lot ofsubstance to Boom Crash Opera's music. While the band experimentedto a certain extent with different musical styles on this album,(most notably in the almost-blues of "End Up Where I Started" and"Mountain of Strength"), it was their stock radio-friendly popsongs at which they excelled. The highlight of this set is thegenuinely memorable "Dancing in the Storm," and the song became oneof four hit singles to be released from the album -- the othersbeing "Onion Skin" (which reached the Australian Top Ten, and alsoBillboard's Modern Rock Top Five), "The Best Thing" and "Get Out ofthe House." This album made Boom Crash Opera stars (for a briefperiod, at least) but where the hand of fate that helped INXS,Icehouse, and Midnight Oil find success abroad eluded Boom CrashOpera, although many argued they deserved wider acclaim andrecognition.
