With the success of the Runaways, official Hollywood creepy guyKim Fowley decided to put together a new group of teen girls topackage and market to America. With the beginnings of punk and newwave starting to make their mark in the States, Fowley decided totake advantage of the media fascination by starting the very, veryfake punks Venus and the Razorblades and the fake new wave groupThe Orchids. The Orchids featured bassist Laurie McAllister who hadreplaced Vicki Blue in The Runaways before they fragmented. Vaguelymodelled after Blondie and Pat Benatar, the band isn’t even thatbad. They’ve got the same problems the Runaways had. You know whatthey are mimicking. But they really never make it all the way. Theynever really get to where they’re heading. The same is true here.Fowley got them signed to MCA records for one album and a fewsingles. The album opens with Girls, that also was released as asingle, and its pretty tuneful. In 1987 three of the band memberstoured the Los Angeles clubs under the moniker of Puss N Boots andthere is a rumour that a second The Orchids album was recorded andset for release with the title Jukebox Rebel through Neon AngelRecords in 1988. The album should have been produced by Kim Fowleyand should have featured eleven tracks. However, it is open tospeculation as to whether this record was actually released, so farI havent seen it for sale on the net.
