A punishing American death metal group with a penchant forpairing uncompromising decibels with controversy, Deicide emergedin the late 1980s alongside contemporaries like Cannibal Corpse andCarcass. Based out of Tampa, Florida, the band poisoned themainstream in 1992 with their sophomore effort Legion, which becameone of the best-selling death metal LPs of the Nielsen Soundscanera. Employing a lethal mix of sonic heft and Satanism, Deicide’schampioning of animal sacrifices and anti-Christianity rhetoricyielded attacks from religious organizations and animal rightsgroups — bomb threats from the Animal Militia culminated in anexplosion at a Stockholm venue in 1992 — and helped make them oneof the more prominent social and sonic antagonizers in the ’90sdeath metal scene. The group continued to mine the depths ofdepravity and despair well into the new millenium. So no matter ifyou love em or hate em, you still have to respect Deicide’swillingness to remain true to their original musical vision. Notmusic for the faint of heart.
