Not only was Agallochs Pale Folklore an astoundingly ambitiousand accomplished debut, it made for a stark geographical anomaly,since its eclectic, avant-garde folk-metal was the sort of thingone would expect to emerge from Scandinavia — not Portland. Epic,atmospheric, deeply melancholy, yet extremely heavy, its songsshowed the same level of daring cross-pollination as those ofNorways Ulver or Swedens Opeth, as well as off-the-beaten-pathexperiments with folk music forms pioneered by Finland’s Amorphis,among others — yet unquestionably treaded its own, unique path. Thealbum’s fascinating journey begins with the three-song suite titledThe Painted Fire Across the Skyline, featuring forceful, drivingpower chords, elegiac melodies on acoustic guitar and piano, andhalf-whispered, half-screamed vocals backed by mood-enhancing icywinds. Next (and get a load of these titles!) comes theastonishingly beautiful The Misshapen Steed, alternating painfullysparse keyboard tinkling with lush mock-string orchestrations;followed by a return to more energetic dark metal intercut withmelancholy quiet passages on stunning achievements like Hallways ofEnchanted Ebony, Dead Winter Days and The Embers Dress the Sky.Finally, colossal closer The Melancholy Spirit brings all of theseelements around for one final, inventively varied go-round, whilealso introducing an odd, choppy guitar figure reminiscent of thePolice! All in all, and with or without its folk subgenreconnotations, Pale Folklore was as important a black metal album asany American band ever produced; and arguably one of a handful thathelped launch the country to worldwide respect in this arena forthe new millennium, whereas before Agalloch, most bands had beenmere apprentices to the Scandinavian masters.
