Black vinyl with gatefold cover

Much like Behexen, Dark Funeral have been at this whole blackmetal thing for some time. Not sure if “pioneer” is appropriate forthese Swedish tremolo-crafters, but they are influential. Theirapproach is straightforward, their black metal is classic, andtheir releases consistent. Where Shadows Forever Reign is the sixthstudio album from the old school quartet. Though there are someline-up changes since last time (Lord Ahriman being the onlyconsistent member since the start) the most obvious is that theband has changed vocalist to Heljarmadr of Curse 13 and its one ofthe best choices they ever made. If you’ve heard of little knownblack metal acts Grá and Cursed 13, you already know Heljarmadr.For those unfamiliar, Grá reaches into atmospheric black metalwhile Cursed 13 cranks out some good ole black ‘n roll. The formeris moody and the latter is stupid fun. And, as it turns out, Iprefer Heljarmadr’s solo work to his work in Dark Funeral.Heljarmadr is a capable substitute for Broberg and Where ShadowsForever Reign is an album that throws its horns back to theblossoming 90s scene with love. And while a lot of fans will likethat, after all, the true cult will stand for no evolution insound, and will tolerate nothing that hasn’t been recorded onaluminium foil. So in the end its pretty much your own choice howmuch you love the old stuff. Where Shadows Forever Reign might bethe call back you might have been looking for. There’s plenty ofbands trying to emulate the the sound of the era, but theauthenticity is oft merely imitation. Though I can see how someonewould see that approach in Dark Funeral. There isn’t a singleaspect of this album you haven’t already heard done somewhere else,or by the band themselves. And for someone looking for a breath offresh air, look elsewhere. Dark Funeral stay on that shadowy, lefthand path, marching onwards towards destruction.
