The Swedish one-man black metal space opera act Oxiplegatz washeaded by Alf Svensson who had been involved with acts such asGrotesque, At The Gates and Diabolique. The second album "WorldsAnd Worlds" is a madcap mix of speedy blast-beat programmeddrumming, heavy rocking post-black metal guitars, massivedroning-hornet synthesisers, blaring synth brass horns and all theother demented accoutrements that keyboard-generated fauxorchestras can offer, along with an array of vocal styles that slipback and forwards from black metal rasp to guttural death metal togirlie pop (courtesy of Svensson's missus - true love comes inhandy, don't it?) Z-grade hit-n-miss operatic without warning orgood reason as to why such styles of singing should appear whenthey do. Songs lurch about from one gritty power metal guitar riffor ersatz classical music melody to the next and one vocal style tothe next - the album isn't clear as to why Ms Svensson had to beroped in to sing since there are no duets in which male and femalevoices play protagonist and antagonist - so the whole album comesacross as an overwhelming mess of loony pulp sci-fi fictioninspiration and pyrotechnical theatrics about an extended voyage inouter space. At least Alf Svensson is consistent as an all-roundmusician, composer and arranger: his skill in playing differentmusical genres across a broad range of instruments and studiorecording equipment is top-notch, and his ability to co-ordinatethe varying styles of black metal, death metal, power metal, hardrock, synth cheese, girlie pop, lounge lizard male crooning andB-grade sci-fi soundtrack music into one flowing whole is soextraordinary as to be unbelievable, at least until it's heard.What saves this album from falling into outright kitsch bombastturns out to be a great deal: large injections of blackened deathmetal impose some discipline as does a minimal and cleanproduction. The Svenssons do not take themselves or their subjectmatter of Earthlings questing among the stars like Vikings injet-packs, finding other planets to colonise, too seriously. Theremight be a satirical dig here at narratives (be they literary,cinematic or real life) of colonial conquest and subjugation of theaboriginals of conquered territories, and of the language, symbolsand music that accompany such narratives and mythologies. If you'rein the mood for deranged hilarious space metal opera and canswallow loads of rich casein that coming with that without barfingit all up afterwards, this album was made just for you.
