Beskrivning

2015re-release of the 2005 album with new artwork and different tracklisting.

Sometimesgood albums receive the attention they deserve and sometimes theypass by, hardly unnoticed even beyond the mainstream fans.Thankfully some labels out there do a very good job with sniffingout hidden and forgotten gemstones and bringing them to the masses.Polish Skol Records is one of these labels and the latest diamondthey unearthed is German Gothic Fate’s (featuring ex-Gamma Ray bassplayer Uwe Wessel) second album Illuminati, originally releasedindependently in 2005. Hailing from Hamburg, the quintet playedpower metal (a combination that has yielded tremendous results inthe past) and given the quality contained on this album, it is amystery and shame that they did not manage to attract widerattention and ended up disbanding the same year. While it doesn’tbring anything new to the table, Illuminati has its strengths inthe mature song writing that shows that the guys were no greenhornsand have been around the block a few times. Without even a hint ofan intro, Enemy is a dynamic, mid-paced opener that is a welcomedifference from the usually double-bass drenched scorchers powermetal bands place right at the beginning to get people moving. Notso here, second spot Lies takes care of that and while deeplyentrenched in the German sound, Gothic Fate do not have the big andsuper catchy choruses, while staying immediately accessiblenevertheless. One big factor here is Darius Schuler’s strong, highvoice that manages to elevate the songs to the next level all onits own. The three-piece Illuminati trilogy undoubtedly is thecentrepiece of the album and underlines the band’s ability to taketraditional, German power metal and successfully cross it with sometraditional heavy metal to arrive at a mature and non-happy versionof the genre, forsaking any gimmicks, but instead convincingthrough quality, an approach that more bands should try at leastevery now and then. And with songs like Desperate Measures,Nightmare or the double-bass scorcher Angel of Sin (easily thealbum’s best song) it makes Gothic Fate’s fate even moremysterious, since pretty much everything a label could look for ina quality power metal album was right there at their fingertips. Beit as it may, even ten years after the original release, Illuminatistill can compete with a good part of today’s power metal scene, congratulations to Skol Records to find this in the depth ofoblivion, because this deserves to be discovered by power metalfans worldwide!
