To many, HomerHenderson is the country version of Weird Al Yankovic, writing andsinging funny songs on a number of politically incorrect subjects.In reality, this is only one side of his musical makeup, an oeuvrethat also encompasses hard Jimmy Reed-blues and electronica. Thiscollection brings together all of Henderson's early 45's, issued ona number of small imprints in Texas. The emphasis is on thehumorous side of Homer's work, with such gems as "Pickin' Up BeerCans on the Highway," "Lee Harvey Was a Friend of Mine," "I Want aDate With a Cowboy Cheerleader," "Nightclub Cancer," and "HillbillyPecker" being counted in the line-up -- all minor classics of darkhumor. Homer Henderson's assassin ode Lee Harvey Was a Friend ofMine is a sympathetic tune that recounts a childhood friendshipwith the alleged JFK gunman, where the lyrics go: Lee Harvey was afriend of mine. He used to take me fishin' all the time. He used tothrow the ball to me when I was just a kid. They say he shot thepresident, but I don't think he did. The track first appeared on a1985 vinyl 7-inch by Homer Henderson & the DalworthingtonGarden Boys. The bandleader, then based in Dallas, co-wrote thetune with friend Jay Cotton. "I think we wrote most of it while wewere driving around drinking Slurpees and smoking weed," chucklesHenderson. "We'd pass by Oswald's house, the Texas Theatre, andMarsalis Avenue in Oak Cliff, where Jack Ruby had lived. Thirtyyears ago people didn't give a damn about it, but we knew all thoseplaces." Though he considers the song something of a cheap shot,it's stood the test of time, having been covered by T. Tex Edwards,the Asylum Street Spankers, Laura Cantrell, and even Oswald's oldgirlfriend, Judyth Vary Baker. The liner notes in this cd iswritten by Nick Tosches, whom Henderson sometimes collaborateswith. Overall this is a must have package, with some solid music inbetween the laughs.
